History can be found in the strangest of places. This guest post by James Nason from @basildonhistory (insta) @basildon-heritage (facebook) is about what lies beneath Hanningfield Reservoir https://fortheloveofhistoryhome.wordpress.com/2022/08/12/the-ancient-hamlet-of-peasdown/ IMAGE (C) Fremnell’s Manor, 1954, The Sphere Did you know that on this day 1,031 years ago a battle was fought not far from Maldon (what you can see in this photo). You can read more about it here https://fortheloveofhistoryhome.wordpress.com/2020/03/18/come-quickly-to-us-as-men-to-the-fight-the-battle-of-maldon/ #onthisdayinhistory #battleofmaldon #vikings #saxons #englishnbattles #didyouknow #essexhistory #maldon #battlefieldsofbritain #historyblog This month I am looking at history below the surface, places hidden by the landscape. The Hillforts of Southend looks at 2 forts dating back to the Iron Age and I look at what a Hillfort is. As the month comes to a close I thought i would share some recommendations and further reading on this month's theme of Rochford hundred. In this beautiful weather we have been having I went and explored Leigh on Sea by using their Heritage Trail, learning all about its history and heritage. On this day 805 years ago in 1217 the Lincoln Fair occurred. Not your usual fair but in fact a battle fought against the French and William Marshall of England. Let's not forget Nicola de la have which you can.find out more about here https://fortheloveofhistoryhome.wordpress.com/2022/03/15/the-cunning-old-woman-and-the-castle/ image copyright ©️ @sharonbennettconnolly, permission granted. This month i have been chatting to Chris Langdon, Is there something interesting about your #localhistory? Maybe a link to some historical event of person or just something that happened that you want to share. What about a #localmuseum or #historygroup? Then I would love to hear from you. Drop me a DM for more info. Do you know what the Rochford 100 is? Find out what a hundred was and how it relates to my local history in this months post - Queens, Battles and War.
